Daniela Peña Guerrero is a PostDoc researcher in the Department of Catchment Hydrology at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Halle, Germany. She has been working at UFZ since 2021, first as a Doctoral Guest Researcher and currently as a PostDoc since June 2024. Her research focuses on water resources and hydrological processes in the context of climate change.
Her educational background includes:
- M.Sc. in Natural Resources Management from Cologne University of Applied Sciences, Germany
- M.Sc. in Environmental Sciences from Universidad Autónoma San Luis Potosí, Mexico
- B.Sc. in Industrial Microbiology from Universidad Autónoma San Luis Potosí, Mexico
Daniela's research interests center around hydrological droughts, climate and land use change impacts on water resources, and satellite remote sensing for water monitoring. Her work particularly focuses on water availability in Central Asia and Chile, examining how climate change affects agricultural water use and irrigation practices. She has conducted extensive research on precipitation patterns across Central Asian mountains and their relationship with climate teleconnections, as well as drought impacts on water quality in the Maipo River Basin in Chile.
Her scientific contributions demonstrate a strong focus on applying remote sensing and hydrological modeling techniques to understand water resource challenges in arid and semi-arid regions facing climate change pressures.
Daniela has received recognition for her work through multiple publications in high-impact journals including:
- International Journal of Climatology
- Environmental Research Letters
- Hydrological Sciences Journal
As a researcher at UFZ, Daniela is part of a larger team investigating water resources and environmental systems. Her work contributes to understanding how climate change impacts water availability for agriculture, particularly in vulnerable regions like Central Asia and Chile.
