Dr Daniel Varndell is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Humanities at the University of Winchester. He specializes in 20th/21st century literature and film, focusing on adaptation theory, performance studies, and ethical interrogations of torture representation. His research spans topics like cinematic remakes, psychoanalysis, and Autism Spectrum Disorder portrayals. Varndell holds a PhD from the University of Southampton (2010) and has supervised three current PhD candidates.
- Teaching: Undergraduate modules on World Literature, Modernism, Critical Theory, and Literature/Film Adaptation
- Research Areas: Film Remakes, Screen Performance, Memory Studies, Etiquette in Torture Depictions
Publications include monographs on Hollywood remakes (2014) and an upcoming 2023 SUNY Press book on film performance and social form. Recent work explores color symbolism in Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon (2017) and Peter Sellers’ comedic genius in The Pink Panther (2018).
Recipient of AHRC PhD funding (2008-10) and active member of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies.
