Daniel Van Der Weide is a Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with affiliations in Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering. His research focuses on microfabricated circuits and sensors for high-frequency applications, including scanned probe microscopy, terahertz technology, and biomedical device development.
Education: PhD 1992 (Stanford University), MS 1990 (Stanford University), BS 1987 (University of Iowa).
Research Interests:
- Terahertz circuits and devices
- Localized spectroscopy of biological systems
- Multifunctional scanned probe microscopy
- Nonlinear transmission line systems
- Remote instrumentation and educational outreach
Key achievements include over 200 publications and prestigious awards such as the NSF PECASE Award (1998) and Vilas Associate Award (2002). His lab develops in situ measurement systems for materials characterization, including microwave tissue ablation tools and terahertz sensors for aviation security.
Selected Awards:
- 1998 NSF PECASE Award
- 1999 Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship
- 2002 Vilas Associate Award
- IEEE Fellow (1996)
Teaching includes advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in communications circuits (ECE 547), circuit analysis (ECE 230), and dissertation research mentoring. His work bridges engineering disciplines through innovations in chipless RFID tags, reconfigurable helical antennas, and topological semimetal sensors.
