Daniel Urquijo is a Spanish Researcher in the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy. He joined the institution in 2022 as part of that academic cohort. His work focuses on comparative political analysis with particular emphasis on discrimination and its institutionalization in legal systems.
Urquijo's research interests span several interconnected fields including Sub-Saharan Africa studies, quantitative political methodology, political economy, American politics, race and ethnicity studies, discrimination and marginalization phenomena, and law and politics. His doctoral research specifically examines the political processes through which discriminatory practices became codified into law in both South Africa and the American South, suggesting a comparative approach to understanding institutionalized discrimination across different historical and geographical contexts.
His doctoral work is supervised by Miriam A. Golden (noted as a Former EUI Professor) with Elias Dinas serving as co-supervisor. As a Researcher at EUI, Urquijo participates in the institution's academic community focused on advanced social science research within the European context. The Department of Political and Social Sciences at EUI is one of the institution's four core academic departments, known for its interdisciplinary approach to political and social phenomena.
