Daniel T. Chiu is the A. Bruce Montgomery Professor of Chemistry, Endowed Professor of Analytical Chemistry, and Washington Research Foundation Professor at the University of Washington. He is also a Professor of Bioengineering and a member of the Cancer Consortium at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. His roles emphasize interdisciplinary research in nanomaterials, microfluidics, and bioanalytical instrumentation.
Dr. Chiu holds a B.A. in Neurobiology and a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley (1993), and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Stanford University (1998). He completed postdoctoral research at Harvard University before joining UW in 2000 as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry.
His research interests focus on innovative technologies for ultra-sensitive bioanalysis, including fluorescent nanomaterials, single-molecule studies, and point-of-care diagnostics. He has developed cutting-edge tools for single-cell biology and digital assays, leveraging expertise in materials science and biophysics.
Dr. Chiu has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the American Chemical Society National Fresenius Award and Pittcon Achievement Award. He is an AAAS Fellow and a Keck Distinguished Young Scholar in Biomedical Research.
He is actively advising graduate students and has secured extensive grants. His work bridges chemistry, bioengineering, and medical applications, contributing to advancements in healthcare and diagnostics. He is affiliated with the Department of Chemistry and collaborates through the Cancer Consortium, fostering interdisciplinary research initiatives.
Dr. Chiu’s laboratory focuses on integrating nanotechnology and microfluidics for biomedical applications. He maintains a strong presence in teaching and mentoring, contributing to both the Chemistry and Bioengineering programs at UW.
