Dr Daniel Strachan is a Professor and Co-head of Equitable Systems for Health at the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, University of Melbourne. He holds a PhD from UCL’s Institute for Global Health, MSc in Social Psychology from the London School of Economics, and BA from the University of Melbourne. His research focuses on social and behavioral change communication, health systems strengthening, and primary health care, particularly in low-resource settings.
Dr Strachan has led global health projects in Australia, the UK, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Southern Sudan, and Uganda. His work emphasizes community perspectives in health system development, with a focus on community health workers (CHWs) and interventions targeting maternal/child health and disease control. Recent projects include the Health Worker Voices Project (tracking health workers’ experiences during the pandemic) and a UK MRC-funded study on diabetes intervention in Ghana.
He co-coordinates MPH courses on primary health care principles and Jamkhed India electives. His research employs mixed methods, including cluster randomized trials and qualitative approaches, to evaluate interventions like inSCALE technology innovations for malaria/diarrhea/pneumonia treatment in Uganda and Mozambique. His work bridges theory with implementation, emphasizing contextual awareness and stakeholder engagement.
Key themes in his publications include CHW performance optimization, mHealth applications in low-income settings, and policy influence through health systems research. He collaborates with institutions like UCL and the University of Ghana, focusing on scalable, community-driven solutions to global health challenges.
