Professor Daniel Schwemer holds the Chair of Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the University of Würzburg's Faculty of Philosophy, where he has served since 2011. He chairs the Deutsche Orient-Gesellschaft (since 2021) and previously held academic positions at SOAS University of London (2005-2011) and Universität Heidelberg.
His research focuses on Hittitology, Akkadian studies, and the religious, magical, and medical traditions of the ancient Near East. Schwemer leads major interdisciplinary projects including KFG 42 MagEIA (DFG-funded Centre for Magical Text Traditions), Tive (Hurrian Language Studies), and the Hittite Corpus of Divinatory Texts. His methodological approach integrates philological analysis with digital humanities and cultural history.
