Daniel R. Soto is an Associate Professor and Chair of the School of Applied Human and Environmental Sciences at Sonoma State University. He holds a PhD in Applied Physics from Stanford University (2010), an MS in Physics from San Francisco State University (2004), and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford (1994). Previously, he served as a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University’s Earth Institute, focusing on solar microgrids in Mali and Uganda, and worked in industry developing optical micromechanical devices.
His research bridges energy systems, robotics, and sustainable development. Key interests include energy efficiency in both large-scale and small-scale systems, reducing barriers to energy access in developing regions, and applying computational/communication technologies to energy challenges. His work also explores robotics and biomechanics, particularly multilegged locomotion and swarm intelligence.
Recent publications highlight contributions to robotics locomotion frameworks, swarm dynamics, and granular terrain navigation. His 2023 work spans fluid propulsion mechanisms, frictional swimming algorithms, and emergent swarm behaviors. Earlier research (2012–2014) focused on photovoltaic microgrids and consumer-driven energy solutions in underserved areas.
Affiliations include the Geography, Environment, and Planning department and the College of Humanities, Social Sciences, and the Arts. He is currently on leave for Spring 2025.
