Dr. Daniel Puhlman is an Assistant Professor of Family Studies in the Human Development and Family Studies program within the School of Educational Leadership, Higher Education and Human Development at the University of Maine. His research focuses on family processes and parenting dynamics, with particular emphasis on co-parenting relationships and the mutual influence between mothers and fathers in child-rearing.
Dr. Puhlman has developed innovative methodologies including qualitative genogram analysis for theorizing family dynamics and created the Maternal Gatekeeping Scale to measure maternal behaviors that regulate father involvement. His current research explores how advanced technologies including artificial intelligence and video games can support healthy family relationships.
With 15 years of clinical experience as a Marriage and Family Therapist, Dr. Puhlman brings practice-informed perspectives to his research and teaching. He teaches courses on Parenting and Professional Practices in Human Development, integrating clinical insights with academic research.
His publications demonstrate theoretical contributions to understanding maternal gatekeeping and methodological innovations in qualitative family research. Current projects continue to bridge family theory development with practical applications for strengthening family relationships.
