Dr. Daniel Philippon is an Associate Professor of English at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts. His research focuses on American environmental literature, ecocriticism, food studies, and sustainability. He explores how literary texts shape environmental values and practices, particularly through the lens of food writing and sustainable food systems. His recent work examines the roles of Wendell Berry, Carlo Petrini, and Alice Waters in reshaping America’s food culture.
Education: PhD in English from the University of Virginia (1998). Awards include the Morse-Alumni Association Award for Teaching and the Motley Exemplary Teaching Award. He has held prestigious roles such as Fulbright Scholar in Italy, Visiting Professor at École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, and Senior Fellow at the Rachel Carson Center. Courses taught include 'The American Food Revolution' and 'Environmental Humanities.'
His research bridges literary criticism with environmental ethics, conservation biology, and food systems. Recent publications include *The Farmer, the Gastronome, and the Chef* (2024) and *Conserving Words* (2005). He emphasizes the intersection of practice and theory in achieving sustainable systems, advocating for middle-scale solutions between artisanal and industrial food production.
