Daniel (Tye) Pettay, PhD is an Assistant Professor of Biological Oceanography at the Department of Natural Sciences, University of South Carolina Beaufort. His research focuses on microalgal responses to environmental change, combining molecular genetics, environmental monitoring, and comparative physiology. He investigates algal symbionts of tropical invertebrates and temperate microalgal communities along the eastern US coast.
Education:
- PhD in Biology (2011), The Pennsylvania State University
- MS in Marine Biology (2006), College of Charleston
- BS in Biological Sciences (2000), Clemson University
Research Interests: Acclimation/adaptation mechanisms in algae, aquatic toxicology, and biogeochemical processes influenced by microalgae. Current projects emphasize algal symbioses with corals and coastal ecosystem impacts from human activities.
Teaching: Invertebrate Zoology, Marine Biology, Cell/Molecular Biology, and Biological Oceanography courses at both undergraduate and advanced levels.
Labs/Infrastructure: Based in the Marine Sciences Building (Office 204/Lab 201), conducting continuous environmental monitoring and molecular ecology studies.
