Daniel Noemi Voionmaa is a Professor of Cultures, Societies, and Global Studies at Northeastern University’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH). He holds a PhD from Yale University (2003) and previously taught at the University of Michigan (tenured) and Bard College (visiting assistant professor). His research bridges critical theory, literature, and visual arts, with a focus on Latin America’s political, social, and cultural landscapes. He is the author of four seminal books, including Surveillance, the Cold War and Latin American Literature (2022), analyzing secret police and intellectual networks.
Voionmaa’s work explores themes like poverty aesthetics, Cold War dynamics, soccer as national identity, and postmodern narratives. He contributes regularly to El Desconcierto, Chile’s leading online newspaper. His current FIFA-CIES-funded research examines soccer, modernization, and Latin American national identities.
Teaching interests include human rights, Latin American film, and literature. Office hours are Mondays/Wednesdays 9:30–10:25 AM at 225R RP, 360 Huntington Ave, Boston.
