Professor Daniel Miller is an Adjunct Professor at the Institute for Culture and Society, Western Sydney University, specializing in digital anthropology, material culture, and the anthropology of consumption. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (1983) and has conducted extensive fieldwork across multiple global regions, including India, Trinidad, London, the Philippines, and Ireland.
His research explores human relationships with technology, consumption patterns, and material culture. Notable projects include the ERC-funded 'Why We Post' (2012-2017) and 'ASSA – The Anthropology of Smartphones and Smart Ageing' (2017-2022), which analyzed social media and aging in global contexts. His recent work compares philosophical theories with the lived experiences of retired Irish individuals to contrast anthropological and philosophical approaches.
Miller has authored foundational texts such as Material Culture and Mass Consumption (1987) and The Comfort of Things (2008), and edited volumes like How the World Changed Social Media (2016). His awards include two European Research Council Advanced Grants.
His current book project examines the intersection of philosophy and anthropology through the lens of elderly perspectives. Miller's work bridges theoretical frameworks with ethnographic rigor, influencing both academic and public understandings of technology and culture.
