Jolynna Sinanan is a Lecturer in Social and Digital Anthropology at the University of Manchester. Her research focuses on digital anthropology, media practices, and intergenerational mobilities with a particular emphasis on mobile media in tourism industries like Everest tourism. She has conducted fieldwork across Trinidad, Nepal, Australia, and Cambodia.
Her expertise spans digital ethnography, development anthropology, and regionally comparative mobilities. Current research explores how digital infrastructures shape livelihoods in the Everest tourism sector through visual ethnographic methods.
Key publications include Social Media in Trinidad (2017), Visualising Facebook (2017), and contributions to Journal of Communication and New Media and Society. She co-edited Handbook on Transnationalism (2022) and authored entries in International Encyclopedia of Anthropology.
Her research intersects with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to sustainable tourism, gender equality, and infrastructure development in global contexts.
Collaborative work includes the Why We Post research project exploring global social media practices through ethnographic comparison. She maintains active engagement with visual anthropology methodologies through projects like composite visual ethnography.
