Dr. Daniel McDevit is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Delaware (UD), specializing in the Associate in Arts Program (AAP) at the Wilmington Campus. He also serves as the Disability Support Services (DSS) Coordinator for UD’s Wilmington campus. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of New Brunswick, an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from Boston College, and a B.S. in Biology from Trinity College. Prior to joining UD, he taught biology at Florida SouthWestern State College in Florida.
Dr. McDevit’s research spans diverse areas including algal biodiversity, seaweed taxonomy, and ecology of marshland habitats. He actively explores the biology of honeybees through UD’s AAP beehives and investigates the impact of hands-on research in science education. His work has contributed significantly to understanding species diversity via DNA barcoding, particularly in Canadian marine algae and Bermudian Rhodophyta.
He teaches a range of biology courses, including Principles of Biology, Human Heredity, and Evolutionary Ecology. His publications reflect expertise in molecular systematics, ecological adaptations, and immunology. He has presented extensively on topics such as algal biodiversity, barcoding methodologies, and immune system gene regulation.
Dr. McDevit’s academic contributions include lab manuals and methodological chapters on DNA barcoding, emphasizing practical applications in marine biology. His roles in education and accessibility highlight his dedication to fostering inclusive and experiential learning environments.
