Dr. Daniel M. Knight is a Professor in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, and Director of the Centre for Cosmopolitan Studies. He holds a PhD in Anthropology from Durham University and has previously held positions at the London School of Economics and Durham University. Collaborating closely with the British School at Athens, his research focuses on economic crisis, temporality, neoliberalism, and renewable energy in Greece and Southern Europe.
His key works include Vertiginous Life: An Anthropology of Time and the Unforeseen (2021) and co-authored The Anthropology of the Future (2019). Current research examines the temporal complexity of renewable energy initiatives in austerity Greece, funded by the Leverhulme Trust. He co-edits History and Anthropology journal and has received grants from ESRC, EPSRC, British Academy, and the National Bank of Greece.
His edited volumes include Ethnographies of Austerity (2017) and special journal collections on 'Alternatives to Austerity' and 'Orientations to the Future'. Ongoing work includes an edited volume on French philosopher Michel Serres.
Research interests span temporal vertigo in crises, green energy's socio-political impacts, and future-oriented anthropological frameworks. Grants and partnerships underscore interdisciplinary engagement with austerity's socio-temporal dimensions.
