Daniel Koss is an Associate Senior Lecturer and Research Scholar at Harvard University's Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations. His research focuses on political parties in East Asian politics, particularly the Chinese Communist Party and Japan's Liberal Democratic Party, examining their roles in authoritarian systems and local governance. He combines historical analysis with fieldwork spanning mainland China, Taiwan, and Japan.

Koss’s work explores long-term historical perspectives, including the Cultural Revolution, Great Leap Forward, Second Sino-Japanese War, and governance reforms of the Yongzheng Emperor. His first book (2018, Cambridge University Press) analyzes the Chinese Communist Party’s structure, while his current manuscript investigates Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party. His research integrates statistical data, historical documents, and interviews with political actors.
