Daniel Kalderon is Professor of Biological Sciences at Columbia University. His research uses Drosophila molecular genetics to study Hedgehog signal transduction and follicle stem cell regulation. The lab investigates how cell behaviors are controlled by intercellular communication during development, with implications for cancer biology and regenerative medicine.
Key research areas include: Hedgehog signaling mechanisms in wing disc development; phosphorylation-dependent regulation of Cubitus interruptus; and niche signaling gradients controlling follicle stem cell maintenance in ovaries. The laboratory combines genetic approaches with biochemical and imaging techniques.
Professor Kalderon's work has elucidated conserved signaling principles across species, particularly in Hedgehog pathway activation and stem cell niche organization.
