Dr. Daniel Johnson is Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of American Culture and Literature at Bilkent University, specializing in early American history and the early modern Atlantic world. His research examines the relationship between social change and cultural formation from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, particularly how ordinary people experienced and shaped the English colonial project in the Americas. He received his Ph.D. in History from Binghamton University.
Dr. Johnson's research explores:
- Power structures in colonial urban environments
- Cultural exchange across the Atlantic world
- Social movements in colonial contexts
- Everyday experiences of colonization
- Historical methodologies for studying non-elite perspectives
He teaches introductory courses in American history and literature, along with specialized electives on early modern Atlantic history, social movements in U.S. history, and gothic literature and film. His current book projects investigate the material culture of colonial encounters and the role of informal economies in early American cities. Outside academia, Dr. Johnson performs music and maintains interests in cultural preservation.
