Daniel J. Paré is an Associate Professor in the Communication Department at the University of Ottawa's Faculty of Arts, with cross-appointments in Information Studies and the Institute for Science, Society, and Policy. His academic work bridges communication studies, technology policy, and international development.
His research specializes in:
- ICT for Development (ICT4D) and e-government initiatives
- Internet governance and information policy
- Social movements and democratization processes
- Critical analysis of geospatial web technologies
- Media-society interactions in global contexts
Current research investigates whether open government data initiatives substantively transform citizen-government relations, challenging optimistic narratives about technology's emancipatory potential. His sole documented recent publication analyzes Malaysia's Bersih movement through the lens of embodied politics against electoral authoritarianism.
As former President of the Canadian Communication Association (2016-2018), he promoted critical communication research nationally. His supervision spans 12 countries across Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe, reflecting his international research focus. Teaching includes graduate courses on ICT history and undergraduate courses in media studies and international development communication.
