Professor Daniel J. Bodony is a faculty member at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), holding roles such as Blue Waters Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in the Grainger College of Engineering. He leads the Aeroacoustics and Flow Physics Research Group, focusing on hypersonic flows, fluid-structure interactions, and computational fluid dynamics. His academic positions include affiliations with the Materials Research Lab, National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), and Mechanical Science and Engineering.
Education: Ph.D. (2005) and M.S. (1999) from Stanford and Purdue Universities, respectively. Research expertise spans aeroacoustics, hypersonics, and data-driven modeling. His work addresses jet noise reduction, thermal protection systems, and plasma jet dynamics. He has received awards such as the NSF CAREER Award (2012) and UIUC’s Rose Teaching Award (2022).
Key research interests include fluid-material coupling in high-enthalpy flows, compressible turbulence, and large-scale parallel computing. His grants and collaborations involve the DoD, NASA, and Sandia National Lab. He advises multiple Ph.D. students and postdocs, including Sandeep Murthy (2025) and Fabian Dettenrieder (2024). He teaches advanced courses like AE 451 Aeroelasticity and AE 598 CAA.
Service roles include leadership in professional societies (AIAA Fluid Dynamics Technical Committee, APS Division of Fluid Dynamics). His lab’s recent projects include extreme-scale simulations of hypersonic flows and data-driven control of multi-physics systems.
