Dr. Daniel Humphreys is a Senior Lecturer and UKRI Future Leaders Research Fellow at the School of Biosciences, University of Sheffield. He obtained his PhD in Cellular Microbiology from the University of Cambridge and holds a BSc in Microbiology (University of Liverpool) and MSc in Biological Research (University of Manchester).
His research focuses on the host cell biology of Salmonella Typhi, particularly DNA damage responses and cellular senescence during typhoid fever and chronic carriage. He investigates how typhoid toxin subverts Replication Protein A (RPA) to induce replication stress and senescence, accelerating cellular aging to facilitate infection.
Scientific Awards:
- UKRI Future Leaders Research Fellowship (2019)
- HIC-Vac GCRF Grant (2019)
- Royal Society Research Grant (2017)
- MRC New Investigator Research Grant (2016)
- Pathology Research Fellowship (2014)
Dr. Humphreys co-ordinates undergraduate Pathobiology modules and lectures on MSc programs in Molecular Medicine and Antimicrobial Resistance. His work contributes to combating multidrug-resistant typhoid in low- and middle-income countries, with recent preprints exploring ISG15 responses and chronic carriage mechanisms.
