Daniel Horner is an Honorary Clinical Chair at the University of Manchester’s Division of Immunology, Immunity to Infection and Respiratory Medicine and a Consultant in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust. Previously, he served as Professor of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (2017–2021). He chairs Salford’s Thrombosis Committee, leading to national recognition for their thrombosis care, and contributed to major national guidelines, including NICE’s 2020 revisions on venous thromboembolism and living guidelines for managing COVID-19 (NG191).
- Education: MBBS from University College London (1997–2003), intercalated BSc in Healthcare Ethics from Manchester (1999–2000), MD on distal deep vein thrombosis (2012), and MSc in Emergency Medicine (2014).
Research focuses on thrombosis management, including isolated distal deep vein thrombosis, prophylaxis strategies for immobilized patients, and risk assessment methodologies. His work aligns with UN SDGs addressing health equity through improved clinical outcomes.
His articles span genetic factors in severe COVID-19, thromboprophylaxis in neurosurgery, cytokine responses in trauma, and migraine management. Key awards include the Anticoagulation Achievement Award (2018) and FICM/NIHR Early Career Researcher Award (2020).
He leads the Greater Manchester Clinical Research Network’s Trauma and Emergency Care theme and serves as Section Editor for the Emergency Medicine Journal.
