Dr. Daniel Hill is a Research Fellow at the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AiPT) within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at Aston University. His research focuses on developing photonics-based analytical technologies for biosensing and micro/nanoplastic detection in healthcare, environmental, and food safety contexts. He holds a PhD from the University of Liverpool and has extensive international collaborations, including leadership roles in EU projects like H2020 MONPLAS and FP7 CanDo.
Dr. Hill has supervised multiple PhD students, including Aisha Bibi (nanoplastic detection) and SYed Atif Iqrar (photoluminescent sensing). His work integrates porous membranes, metal nanoparticle assemblies, and machine learning to enhance sensor sensitivity and specificity. Key grants include a £100k spectrometer acquisition and €3.9M EU funding for MONPLAS.
Teaching highlights include leadership of optoelectronics modules and contributions to interdisciplinary research training. He serves on editorial boards for Journal of Hazardous Materials: Plastics and International Journal of Foods and Biosystems Engineering, and has reviewed proposals for Horizons Europe and EPSRC.
Research projects span 25 years, including roles as Principal Investigator for major EU initiatives and collaborations with industries like Bayer and Bruker. His lab develops low-cost, rapid detection systems for pathogens and environmental contaminants.
