Daniel Hering

Daniel Hering is a full-time Professor of Applied Hydrobiology at the Faculty of Biology, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany. He leads the General Zoology research group and serves as Coordinator of the MERLIN project and Co-Speaker of the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1439 RESIST. His work is centered on freshwater ecosystems, with a strong focus on river and floodplain assessment and restoration.

His research interests include:

• Freshwater ecology and limnology
• Assessment of aquatic biodiversity using macrozoobenthos
• Development and application of ecological assessment tools (e.g., Perlodes system)
• Impacts of multiple stressors on streams and rivers
• Restoration ecology of aquatic systems

Daniel Hering has led and coordinated several major EU-funded research projects, including AQEM, WISER, MARS, and MERLIN, which have significantly contributed to European water policy and ecological monitoring frameworks. His work is funded by the German Federal Environment Agency, the Working Group of Federal States on Water Problems, and the European Union.

He teaches courses in ecology, limnology, and zoology for degree programs in Aquatic Biology, Biology, Transnational Water Management, and Biology teacher training.

Daniel Hering completed his PhD in 1996 at Philipps-University Marburg, focusing on the diet of ground beetles along alpine rivers and the impact of hydropower structures on riparian competition. Prior to his professorship, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher on the effects of dead wood on river morphology and colonization patterns.

He is actively involved in research leadership and has no indication of retirement or part-time status.
