He co-leads the Berlin Summer School focusing on the Laws of Armed Conflict and non-state actors like the International Committee of the Red Cross.
Research Interests
His research examines the democratic deficit caused by private military and security contractors (PMSCs) and their impact on state sovereignty and fundamental rights. Using theories from Hannah Arendt and Walter Benjamin, he analyzes the privatization of coercive violence against Max Weber’s concept of state monopoly on violence. Current work explores self-regulation within PMSCs and its effects on communities in complex environments across South/Central America, Southeast Asia, and Africa, particularly involving non-state actors like multinational corporations and extractive industries.
