Daniel Friess is the Cochran Family Professor at Tulane University's Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, School of Science & Engineering. His research focuses on blue carbon ecosystems, mangrove conservation, and coastal resilience to climate change. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (2009) and a BSc from Imperial College London (2004).
Dr. Friess leads the Mangrove Lab, investigating carbon cycling, sea-level rise impacts, and restoration strategies. His work integrates fieldwork across Southeast Asia with policy engagement through organizations like the Blue Carbon Initiative and IUCN Mangrove Specialist Group.
Recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on blue carbon quantification, mangrove deforestation impacts, and nature-based climate solutions. Articles span interdisciplinary topics including urban coastal management, carbon market mechanisms, and meta-analyses of restoration outcomes, frequently published in high-impact journals like Nature and Science.
- Distinguished Cochran Family Professorship
- Co-Editor in Chief of WIREs Climate Change
