Dr. Daniel Fong is a Reader in Sports Medicine and Biomechanics at Loughborough University, leading the MSc Musculoskeletal Sport Science and Health program. Previously, he served as a Senior Lecturer at Loughborough (2014–2021) and a Research Assistant Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (2008–2013). He also held a Visiting Scholar position at the University of Pittsburgh (2012). His research focuses on ankle sprain injury mechanisms, prevention, and biomechanics, with innovations in wearable technology for injury prevention. He holds adjunct roles at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and is Editor-in-Chief of Sports Biomechanics.
Education: BSc (Physics), MSc (Exercise Science), PhD (Orthopaedics/Traumatology), all from The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Research Interests: Ankle sprain prevention, sports biomechanics, orthopaedic devices, knee biomechanics, slips/falls prevention, and biomedical engineering applications in sports medicine.
Publications Highlight: Over 150 peer-reviewed articles, with recent focus on ankle instability rehabilitation, wearable technology, and injury prevention strategies. Key themes include biomechanical analysis of injury mechanisms, neuromuscular interventions, and clinical trials evaluating therapeutic modalities.
Awards: Hans Gros Emerging Researcher Award (2013), IET Innovation Award (2012), and multiple project awards for sports safety research. His work on anti-sprain systems has been patented globally.
Advising & Grants: Supervises over 20 PhD students and hosts international visiting scholars. His lab actively collaborates with military and clinical institutions on projects like arthrofibrosis treatment and military amputee rehabilitation. Funding includes clinical device development and sports injury epidemiology studies.
Labs & Teams: National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM), part of Loughborough’s interdisciplinary sports science hub. Active in the International Ankle Consortium and sports biomechanics task forces.
