Daniel F. C. Dias

Dr. Daniel F. C. Dias is a Research Fellow in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London, part of the Faculty of Engineering. His research is centered on circular economy modeling, sustainability assessment, and advanced wastewater treatment systems, aligning with EU Green Deal objectives.

Research Interests: Daniel's work focuses on Environmental Engineering Modelling, Circular Economy in Water Systems, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and Mathematical Modeling of Biological Treatment Processes. He investigates resource recovery, hydrodynamics in maturation ponds, and sustainability frameworks for wastewater systems. His expertise bridges engineering, environmental science, and policy-relevant assessment methods.

His recent publications highlight a strong trend in systemic sustainability assessment, particularly in circularity of industrial water systems, social LCA of wastewater treatment, and integration of circular economy principles in EU-funded projects. He frequently employs modeling techniques, including CFD and ASM expansion, to evaluate and optimize treatment performance.

Advising and Grants: Daniel supervised an MSc researcher during his tenure at the BIOENG group. He has been involved in multiple international research projects funded by the EU (e.g., WATER-MINING, iWAYS, RESILEX, SYMBIOREM, SAFELOOP), UNESCO-IHE (SANIUP, GWPP), and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. His roles include modeling, project management, and technical leadership.

Labs and Teams: Daniel was part of the Biotechnology Engineering (BIOENG) group at UFMG under Dr. Adrian Oehmen and Dr. Maria A. M. Reis. Currently, he contributes to environmental systems research at Imperial College London, working within teams focused on sustainable infrastructure and circular economy innovation.
