Daniel Epps is a Professor of Law at Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, specializing in constitutional law and theory, federal courts, and criminal law and procedure with a particular focus on the U.S. Supreme Court. He is a nationally recognized expert regularly quoted in major media outlets including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. Epps co-hosts the influential legal podcast Divided Argument with Professor William Baude, providing expert analysis of Supreme Court decisions to a broad audience.
Educated at the highest levels of legal academia, Epps earned his J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 2008, where he served as Articles Co-Chair of the Harvard Law Review, and his A.B. summa cum laude in Philosophy from Duke University in 2004. His professional journey included clerkships with Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III of the Fourth Circuit and Justice Anthony M. Kennedy of the Supreme Court, followed by appellate practice at King & Spalding LLP in Washington, D.C. Prior to joining WashULaw, he was a Climenko Fellow and Lecturer on Law at Harvard Law School.
Epps's scholarship focuses on Supreme Court reform, constitutional interpretation, and criminal procedure, with his work appearing in top-tier law journals including Harvard Law Review, Yale Law Journal, and Columbia Law Review. His research demonstrates a consistent pattern of examining institutional structures within the legal system and proposing evidence-based reforms to enhance fairness, efficiency, and democratic accountability. Notably, his collaborative work with Ganesh Sitaraman on Supreme Court restructuring gained national prominence when endorsed by presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg.

As an experienced Supreme Court litigator, Epps has served as co-counsel in Ocasio v. United States and drafted successful briefs in Walden v. Fiore. He also served as Special Counsel for Senator Sheldon Whitehouse during the confirmation process for Justice Amy Coney Barrett.
