Daniel Enquobahrie serves as Associate Professor in Epidemiology and Health Systems and Population Health at the University of Washington School of Public Health. He directs the interdisciplinary Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health Education, Science and Practice, a Maternal and Child Health Bureau-funded program serving the WWAMI region.
His research focuses on maternal and child health with emphasis on fetal developmental origins of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Using epigenetic mechanisms like DNA methylation, he investigates how environmental, genetic, and socioeconomic factors during pregnancy influence lifelong health outcomes. His work with Jerusalem-based cohorts demonstrated links between maternal education, DNA methylation at stress-response genes, and adult cardiovascular risk factors.
Enquobahrie's publications highlight trends in developmental epidemiology, particularly socioeconomic determinants of epigenetic changes affecting long-term metabolic health. His 2016 award-winning research in the American Journal of Epidemiology established critical connections between early-life socioeconomic position and biological embedding of disease risk.

As director of the Maternal and Child Health Center of Excellence, he mentors 15-20 MPH students annually across Epidemiology and Health Services departments. The program has trained over 280 graduates since 1985 who now work in academia, state agencies, and NGOs. He actively addresses workforce training challenges amid declining federal support for MCH programs through the Northwest Bulletin newsletter and Maternal and Child Health Webinar Series.
The Center operates as a close-knit academic-practice hub integrating rigorous training with policy resources, community perspectives, and the MCH Research Festival. Its impact extends across Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho through evidence-based interventions for maternal and child health outcomes.
