Professor Daniel D. Richter is a faculty member in the School of Earth & Climate Sciences at Duke University, specializing in soils and forest ecology. His research integrates soil processes with ecosystem and environmental dynamics, particularly focusing on the Critical Zone. He leads the Calhoun Long-Term Soil-Ecosystem Experiment and co-authored the influential book Understanding Soil Change. His work explores how human activities transform soil systems across decadal to millennial timescales.
- Education: Ph.D. (Duke University, 1980); B.A. (Lehigh University, 1973)
- Research Themes: Land-use impacts, Critical Zone dynamics, urban soil contamination, and long-term ecological experiments.
Richter's studies include quantifying soil biogeochemical changes in the southeastern US Piedmont and global initiatives like the Long-Term Soil-Ecosystem Experiments Global Inventory. He has held leadership roles in international organizations such as the Anthropocene Working Group. His recent awards include the 2025 Distinguished Professor title.
- Grants: Includes funding from the National Science Foundation and NC Policy Collaboratory.
- Students: Advised Dr. Daniel Markewitz (now at University of Georgia).
Laboratory and fieldwork focuses include the Calhoun Critical Zone Observatory and urban soil pollution studies in cities like Detroit. His interdisciplinary approach bridges geology, ecology, and environmental health, with over 200 peer-reviewed publications.
