Dr. Daniel C. O. Thornton is a Professor in the Department of Oceanography at Texas A&M University, with academic leadership roles including Assistant Department Head for Academics and Undergraduate Affairs. His research bridges marine biology, atmospheric science, and biogeochemistry, focusing on marine microorganisms' role in aerosol formation, ice nucleation, and climate processes. He holds a Ph.D. and B.Sc. from Queen Mary, University of London.
Research Interests:
- Biogenic aerosols and cloud formation
- Phytoplankton physiology and ecology
- Ice nucleation mechanisms and climate impacts
- Exopolymer particles in marine systems
- Nitrogen and carbon cycling in coastal environments
Thornton’s work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining laboratory experiments with field observations. Recent studies explore the ecological and biogeochemical implications of intact marine microorganisms in the atmosphere and their role in ice nucleation. His lab has contributed to understanding the link between phytoplankton ecophysiology and aerosol properties.
Grants & Advising:
- Advised over 20 graduate students on topics like TEP production, aerosol chemistry, and coastal biogeochemistry.
- Collaborations with institutions such as USC and NOAA on ocean-atmosphere interactions.
Labs & Teams:
- Thornton Lab at Texas A&M, focusing on marine aerosol and phytoplankton research.
- Participates in international projects like US SOLAS and Gulf of Mexico studies.
