Daniel Burdsey

Daniel Burdsey is a Reader in the School of Education, Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Brighton, where he has been a faculty member since 2003. He also holds an honorary Associate Professor (status only) position at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education. His academic work bridges sociology, cultural studies, and geography, with a strong focus on race, ethnicity, and sport.

His research centers on the sociological and cultural analysis of race and ethnicity in public spaces, particularly in sport, leisure, and coastal environments. Key themes include British Asians in football, racism in English football, diasporic sporting cultures, and the racial politics of seaside towns.

His recent publications reflect a consistent engagement with critical race theory, decolonial perspectives, and the spatial dimensions of cultural identity. He has authored or edited eight major books and continues to publish actively in leading journals and edited collections. His work emphasizes theoretical innovation and empirical originality.

He also engages in public outreach, such as through the Transforming Sport Podcast, connecting academic research with broader audiences.
