Daniel Birnbaum

Daniel Birnbaum is a Swedish art critic, theorist, curator, and Professor at The European Graduate School (EGS). He currently serves as Director of the Museum of Modern Art (Moderna Museet) in Stockholm. Previously, he was Rector of Städelschule, Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Frankfurt (2001–2010), where he oversaw Portikus, a leading contemporary art venue. He holds a PhD from Stockholm University (1998) on Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology. His work bridges art theory, curation, and pedagogy, addressing themes like subjectivity, capitalism, and institutional critique.
