Daniel Bayless, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, leading the Molecular Neurobiology Laboratory. His research focuses on understanding the neural circuits underlying social behaviors, particularly how sex hormones influence brain circuits related to mating, aggression, and social information processing. He employs advanced molecular genetic techniques in mice to study neurons expressing sex hormone receptors, aiming to uncover mechanisms behind neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s and autism spectrum disorders.
Education:
- BA in Psychology, University of Oklahoma
- MS and PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience, Tulane University
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neurobiology, Stanford University
Research Interests: Dr. Bayless investigates how sex hormones shape neural circuits controlling social behaviors, emphasizing sex differences and developmental influences. His lab explores the role of Tacr1-expressing neurons in mating and aggression, linking these circuits to reward pathways and dopamine release.
Articles Overview: Recent work includes studies on neuromodulatory dynamics in male sexual behavior, hypothalamic neurons linked to aggression, and sex-dependent gene expression frameworks. These publications highlight his focus on mouse models to dissect neurobiological mechanisms of social behavior.
Awards & Honors:
- Tulane University Flowerree Summer Research Fund Award (2011)
- Outstanding Graduate Research Award (2013)
- State of Louisiana Board of Regents Fellowship (2009–2014)
- NIH Postdoctoral Grant (2014–2015)
Lab & Team: The Bayless Lab prioritizes fostering inclusive environments and advancing neuroscientific diversity. Current team members include postdoctoral fellows and research assistants, with a focus on training future scientists. Collaborative efforts aim to develop therapeutics targeting social processing deficits in humans.
Contact: Daniel’s lab is located at the Salk Institute, La Jolla, CA. Email: dbayless@salk.edu.
