Professor Daniel Akerib is a leading experimental physicist at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, specializing in particle physics and astrophysics. He holds a full-time faculty position in the Particle Physics & Astrophysics division under the Fundamental Physics Directorate. Akerib earned his AB from the University of Chicago (1984) and PhD from Princeton University (1990), followed by postdoctoral roles at Caltech and UC Berkeley. He transitioned to Case Western Reserve University (1995–2014), where he advanced from Assistant to Full Professor and served as Department Chair (2007–2010) before joining SLAC in 2014.
His research focuses on dark matter detection using liquid xenon time projection chambers (TPCs), notably leading the LUX and LUX-ZEPLIN collaborations. Key achievements include advancing detector technology, xenon purification methods, and simulations for sensitivity improvements. He co-founded the Liquid Noble Test Platform at SLAC to develop next-generation detectors like HydroX and XLZD. His work addresses WIMP dark matter, low-mass candidates, and neutrinoless double beta decay.
Akerib’s publications emphasize experimental techniques, detector calibration, and constraints on dark matter models. His team engages graduate/undergraduate students in hardware, software, and data analysis. Collaborations span international institutions, with funding from the Simons Foundation and DOE. Future efforts include the XLZD observatory for multi-faceted astroparticle physics.
