Carter Hall is a Professor & Associate Chair in the Department of Physics at the University of Maryland, College Park. He holds a B.S. (summa cum laude) from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. from Harvard University, where he received the Goldhaber Prize and Wallace-Noyes Fellowship. His research focuses on experimental nuclear and particle physics, particularly dark matter detection via the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment and neutrino studies through the EXO collaboration. He has pioneered techniques in liquid xenon detectors and contributed to projects at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF).
Dr. Hall’s teaching responsibilities include courses such as Physics 165 (Programming for Physical Sciences), Physics 272/273 (Introductory Physics), Physics 375 (Electromagnetic Waves & Modern Physics), and advanced courses like Physics 405 and 410. He has advised numerous PhD students, including those working on LZ/LUX calibration, neutrinoless double beta decay, and xenon detector properties.
His awards include the DOE Early Career Award and CMNS Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award. His research group collaborates on LZ, a next-generation dark matter search using 10 tonnes of liquid xenon, aiming to detect weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) and other rare phenomena like solar axions or neutrinoless double beta decay. Experimental efforts emphasize precision calibration, low-background environments, and advanced data analysis techniques.
