Danelle Larson is Professor of Music Education and Director of the Music Education Division at Eastern Illinois University, teaching courses, advising students, and supervising student teachers. She serves as faculty advisor for the EIU NAfME Collegiate chapter, assistant director of Eastern Music Camp, and current President-Elect of the Music Teacher Education Division of the Illinois Music Educators Association.
Her research focuses on instrumental music education, specifically examining connections between informal music practices (e.g., piano bar performances) and formal educational contexts. Larson advocates for student-centered pedagogies emphasizing active learning, collaborative knowledge construction, and integration of personal musical experiences to foster lifelong engagement with music.
Larson's scholarly work explores how diverse musical experiences influence educational outcomes, with her 2020 study analyzing piano bar musicians' implications for music education and her 2010 research investigating chamber music's impact on high school band students' achievement and attitudes. These publications highlight her commitment to bridging real-world musical practices with classroom instruction.
As an educator and mentor, Larson supervises student teachers and has guided four supervised academic works. She actively develops future music educators through NAfME Collegiate chapter leadership and curriculum design centered on experiential learning, reflection, and reflective practice.
