Dr Danae Tankard is an Associate Professor of Social History at the University of Chichester, where she has taught since 2009. She specializes in early modern English social and cultural history, particularly focusing on 17th- and early-18th-century Sussex. Her research emphasizes microhistorical analysis of material culture, rural life, and social structures.
Before her academic role, Tankard worked at the Weald and Downland Living Museum (2005–2016), initially as a research associate collaborating with the University of Reading. She holds a PhD from Birkbeck, University of London (2002), on 'Attitudes to Death in England c1480–1560.'
Her recent work includes monographs like Factionalism and Dissent in an English City: Chichester, 1678–1685 (2025) and Clothing in 17th-Century Provincial England (2020). Her research spans clothing studies, cottage gardens, and architectural history, often drawing on parish records and material artifacts.
Professional affiliations include Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Sussex Record Society council member, and editorial board member of Sussex Archaeological Collections. Tankard currently teaches modules such as 'A Social History of Early Modern England' and coordinates research methodologies courses.
