Dana Schmalz

Dana Schmalz is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Contemporary Critical Thought at Columbia University. Her research focuses on international and European refugee law, fundamental rights, democratic theory, and critical approaches to international law. She holds a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Frankfurt (2017) and an LL.M. in Comparative Legal Thought from Cardozo Law School, New York (2017).

Her work explores systemic legal frameworks for political membership and access to rights. Previously, she served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Bremen (2019), and held postdoctoral fellowships at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (2011-2016) and the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (2017-2018). She is an active editor for journals including Voelkerrechtsblog, Verfassungsblog, and Kritische Justiz.
