Dana Hagerman

Dana Hagerman, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at the National College of Education (National Louis University) and affiliated with the Reading Recovery® Center for Literacy. She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Literacy Studies emphasis) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2013) and an M.A. in Counseling from DePaul University (1999). Her research focuses on early literacy development, teacher education, and social justice in education.

Dr. Hagerman previously served as Associate Dean and Associate Professor at Edgewood College, designing literacy methods courses for elementary education programs. Her work emphasizes qualitative, longitudinal studies of literacy practices and leadership for equity. She is completing a post-Doctoral study at Texas Woman’s University to become a Reading Recovery Trainer.

Her professional contributions include conference presentations at AERA, LRA, and the International Conference on Education and Social Justice, as well as publications in Middle School Journal, Teaching and Learning Inquiry, and the Wisconsin State Reading Association Journal. Her forthcoming 2022 book examines literacy practices in immigrant families.

Dr. Hagerman advocates for social justice in education through initiatives like her EDJE membership (Education Deans for Justice and Equity) and leadership in teacher professional development.
