معرفی
Dan Romanyk is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Engineering, with cross-appointments in Biomedical Engineering and an Adjunct appointment in the School of Dentistry. He completed both his PhD (2014) and Postdoctoral Fellowship (2016) at the University of Alberta and currently leads the Craniofacial Biomechanics and Biomaterials Research Group (CBBRG).
Dr. Romanyk's research focuses on three primary areas: natural biomaterials (particularly cranial sutures and periodontal ligaments), orthodontic biomechanics, and dental materials. His work establishes mechanobiological connections between mechanical stress/strain conditions in craniofacial tissues and their biological adaptations. He employs advanced numerical modeling and experimental approaches to investigate problems pertaining to the craniofacial region, with applications in clinical dentistry and orthodontics.
His recent publication trends (2023-2025) show a strong emphasis on cranial suture mechanics, orthodontic aligner biomechanics, and dental material characterization. These works demonstrate his integrated approach combining computational modeling with experimental validation, particularly through finite element analysis and in vitro testing methodologies. His research bridges engineering principles with clinical dental applications.
Dr. Romanyk actively mentors a diverse research team including postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, MSc students, and research assistants. Current members include Dr. Michael Baggaley (Killam Postdoctoral Fellow), Mahzad Sadati (PhD candidate studying cranial suture mechanics), and Lingyu Bu (PhD candidate researching orthodontic aligners). His recent graduates have completed work on cranial suture mechanobiology, orthodontic biomechanics, and dental materials.
The Craniofacial Biomechanics and Biomaterials Research Group maintains specialized equipment including Instron testing systems, slow-speed saws, and thermal cyclers for comprehensive biomaterial characterization. The lab supports research on both natural tissues and synthetic dental materials, with particular focus on mechanical properties evaluation and failure analysis.
