Dan O'Brien is a Professor of Philosophy at the School of Education, Humanities and Languages, Oxford Brookes University. He holds a BSc in Biological Sciences from the University of Birmingham, followed by an MA, MPhil, and PhD in Philosophy (2001). Prior to joining Brookes in 2008, he taught at Birmingham, Warwick, and Keele Universities.
Research Interests: Dan’s work spans David Hume studies, epistemology (testimony, epistemic virtues), philosophy of mind (empathy), philosophy of art, history of art (cubism, Caravaggio), and philosophy of education. His publications include 10 books and numerous articles in top-tier journals, with a focus on interdisciplinary connections between philosophy and visual arts.
Recent Publications Trends: His articles examine epistemological frameworks (testimony, virtue epistemology), intersections of art and philosophy (cubism, Caravaggio), and ethical dimensions of Hume’s work. These reflect a consistent emphasis on Hume’s relevance to modern epistemic and cultural debates.
Supervision: Dan has supervised 12 postgraduate projects (2006–2023) on topics like intentionality, mental illness, functionalism, and epistemic vices. He serves as Director of Studies or Co-Director in most cases.
Professional Roles: Organizer of the Royal Institute of Philosophy (Oxford) public lectures and The Oxford Hume Forum. Book Reviews Editor for Hume Studies. Member of the British Society for the History of Philosophy, the Hume Society, and aesthetics-focused societies.
