Dr. Dan Nathan-Roberts is an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at San José State University's College of Engineering. He also serves as the BSISDA 4-Year Program Coordinator.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. & M.S.E. in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan (2012, 2009)
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a Fellowship in Cognitive Science & Communication from the University of Rochester (2006)
- Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2012-2014)
Dr. Nathan-Roberts specializes in ergonomics, health informatics, human factors, and human-computer interaction. His research focuses on usability, user experience (UX), and web design, with applications in healthcare settings. He has extensive experience working at the intersection of engineering and healthcare, having conducted research at UCSF Medical School, UC Berkeley's ergonomics program, the FDA, and Intel's digital health division.
Before joining San José State University as an Assistant Professor in 2014, he completed an AHRQ post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he was a co-investigator on a $2.5 million R01 grant to improve home healthcare informatics. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2020. In addition to his academic roles, he has served as a Senior Advisor and Acting Manager for Health and Safety By Design at WorkSafe New Zealand in 2022-2023.
Dr. Nathan-Roberts is actively involved in consulting and advising for medical device companies and has given guest lectures on healthcare research. He teaches courses including INFO 246 (Information Technology Tools and Applications - Advanced, focusing on UX Research and Design) and ISDA 160 (User Experience Research and Design).
