Dan McKanan is the Ralph Waldo Emerson Unitarian Universalist Senior Lecturer in Divinity at Harvard Divinity School (HDS), where he has taught since 2008. He focuses on religious and spiritual movements for social transformation, with expertise in environmental activism, intentional communities, and the Unitarian Universalist tradition. His research also explores the anthroposophical movement and its intersections with environmentalism.
Education: AB from Harvard College, MDiv from Vanderbilt Divinity School, PhD from the University of Chicago.
Research interests include the role of religion in social justice, nonviolent activism, and the history of Unitarian Universalism. He has authored six books, including Eco-Alchemy (2017) and Prophetic Encounters (2011, winner of the Melcher Book Award), and co-edited volumes on Unitarian Universalist history.
Professional roles: Serves on Unitarian Universalist theological education panels, chairs the International Communal Studies Association board, and directs the Program for the Evolution of Spirituality at HDS. Previously chaired the American Studies program in Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences (2019–2021).
Key contributions: Pioneering work linking spirituality to environmentalism and disability advocacy through communal movements like Camphill. Advocates for nonviolent social change rooted in liberal Christian theology.
