Dan Marshall is an Associate Professor at Berklee NYC, part of Berklee College of Music, where he teaches in the Writing and Production for Musical Theater department. He is also the senior manager for education and outreach at the Metropolitan Opera, blending academic leadership with professional arts engagement. His work spans musical theater, playwriting, and television pilots, with a focus on queer narratives, young audiences, and satirical comedy.
Dan's research and creative interests center on libretto writing as a distinct art form, theater for young audiences (TYA), and the adaptation of literary and mythological works into contemporary performance. He emphasizes craft and joy in writing, bringing his active creative process into the classroom. His fields include musical theater development, dark comedy, environmental theater, and identity exploration through narrative.
His recent works reflect a strong trend in socially conscious storytelling—addressing themes like social media identity (NoFilter: The Picture of Tori Anne Gray), LGBTQ+ self-acceptance (Swish), political satire (President Mom), and educational bureaucracy (Department of Ed). Many of his pieces experiment with form, including radio plays (Snow Way Out), site-specific theater (Operation A.L.I.B.I.), and live TV parody (Gaea's Great Greek Gabfest).
