Dr. Dan Horner is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology at Toronto Metropolitan University, specializing in 19th century urban history with a focus on public order, migration, and colonial governance. His research explores how urban spaces shaped political dynamics, particularly in Montreal and Liverpool, examining topics like crowd violence, quarantine policies, and marginalized communities. He holds a PhD from York University (2010), MA (2004), and BA (2002) from McGill University.
His research interests include the transformation of urban peripheries, transnational migration crises, and the intersection of capitalism and colonialism in shaping urban environments. His monograph "Taking to the Streets" (2020) won the Canadian Historical Association’s Clio Award for Quebec History. Current projects include a SSHRC-funded study on Montreal’s urban fringe in the 19th century.
Teaching focuses on historical criminology, public order, and the Canadian criminal justice system. His publications span peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and reviews in journals like Urban History Review and Journal of the Canadian Historical Association.
