Dan Fagin is a Professor and Director of the Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program (SHERP) at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. He is also the founder and director of the Science Communication Workshops at NYU. Fagin is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, best known for his book *Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation* (2013), which won multiple awards including the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction, the Helen Bernstein Book Award, and the Rachel Carson Environment Book Award. His work focuses on environmental science, public health, and the intersection of journalism with scientific inquiry.
Previously, Fagin worked for 14 years as the environment writer at *Newsday*, where his reporting on cancer epidemiology earned top science journalism awards. He has held fellowships at Cambridge University, the Marine Biological Laboratory, and the Institute of Arctic Biology. As a former president of the Society of Environmental Journalists, he advocates for rigorous environmental reporting. His current projects include a new book exploring monarch butterflies and biodiversity in the Anthropocene.
Fagin’s articles have appeared in *The New York Times*, *Nature*, *Scientific American*, and *Slate*. His work blends investigative reporting with scientific rigor, addressing topics like pollution, public health crises, and environmental policy. Awards and recognitions include Templeton-Cambridge Fellowships, Investigative Reporters and Editors awards, and global accolades for his books.
