Dr. Damien Farine is a Principal Investigator at the Max Planck Institute for Animal Behavior and the University of Konstanz’s Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour. He holds an ERC Starting Grant (€1.5M over 5 years), focusing on how animal groups navigate social and environmental challenges. His work combines cutting-edge technology to study group-living birds in Kenya, emphasizing leadership dynamics shaped by individual experiences and environmental conditions.
- Education: PhD in Zoology (University of Oxford), preceded by studies in Microelectronic Engineering/Computer Science (Australia) and postdoctoral work at UC Davis and Max Planck Institute for Ornithology.
Research interests center on collective behavior in wild animal populations, including stress transmission in social groups and the emergence of group-level behaviors. His lab is globally recognized for tracking long-term social interactions in animal groups to understand how past experiences influence group structures. Recent projects include transdisciplinary collaborations with experimental psychologists.
Award-winning studies include demonstrating democratic decision-making in baboons (Science) and social learning in birds (Nature). His ERC-funded work also supports training opportunities for Kenyan students.
- Labs/Teams: Farine Lab (Max Planck Institute for Animal Behavior), part of the Collective Behaviour Cluster at Konstanz.
